Removal of occlusal interferences – posterior crossbites

Level of evidence: Weak
Suitable for ages: 7+ years old
Indications: A premature contact (occlusal interference) causing a functional shift and unilateral posterior crossbite, the occlusal interference is minor and can be adjusted by reduction of occlusal height or extraction (e.g. a buccally displaced lower primary tooth), the skeletal bases are normal, the arch forms are normal without the occlusal intereference
Contraindications: No functional shift, transverse skeletally constricted maxilla

Treatment Objectives and Biomechanics

  • Eliminate premature contact or occlusal interference
  • Eliminate functional shift
