During the early mixed dentition stage, the eruption of the permanent incisors and first molars should be occurring. The sequence of eruption and a symmetric eruption (the eruption of the same tooth on the contralateral side is < 6 months different) should be observed.
The incisor relationship should possess the normal range of overjet and overbite. There should be no digit-sucking or external habits. If the dentist is unsure, this is an ideal time for the patient’s first consult with a specialist orthodontist.
