Early loss of deciduous teeth – detailed

Treatment Indications & Timings

Early treatment indications

Early loss of Cs

  • If lost prematurely it is often a sign of severe future crowding. It is likely to cause a midline shift.
  • Early treatment to balance the extraction or maintain the space to address the midline is warranted.

Early loss of Ds

  • Early loss can produce loss of leeway space by mesialisation of posterior teeth and there maybe a midline shift as well. Often premolar crowding will result.
  • Intervention for space maintenance, balancing or compensating extractions can be considered.

Early loss of Es

  • Early loss will often result in mesialisation of the permanent molars and hence increase risks of premolar/canine crowding and a dental malocclusion.
  • There is minimal risks of midline shifting
