Treatment Indications


Key features requiring treatment or referral:

Aesthetic concerns of protrusive incisors

  • Aesthetic concerns are not necessarily linked to the severity of the problem however they can be a significant social handicap. (Jolley et al. 2010, Meyer-Marcotty et al. 2010)

Incompetent and/or protrusive lips

  • Lip incompetence of more than 4mm.
  • Lips anterior to a straight line from the nose tip to the chin (E-line) can be considered protrusive.

Excessive incisor proclination

Aesthetic concerns of the facial appearance

  • A protrusive lower third facial profile with everted lips can be aesthetic concerns to the patient

Any associated problems requiring treatment

  • Spacing, crowding, anterior open bite, Class II etc.

Difficulties with speech or function

  • Severe cases of bimaxillary protrusion can be associated with speech or function difficulties.
